Qum Rug - Nearby a dried up river, about 150 kilometers south of Teheran lies the city of Qum. It is the second most holy city in Iran and an important theological centre with extensive education of priests. Although rug weaving in Qom was not a major industry until the past 100 years the luxurious silk and wool rugs of Qom are known for their high quality and are regarded amongst the best in the world.
The manufacturing of carpets began at the of the 20th century. Carpets from Qum are known for their fine workmanship with pile in wool or silk. They are often manufactured with high knot density and have varied patterns (Gardens, medallions or figural carpets with plant and animal motifs), borrowed from different areas in Iran. Sometimes details are tied in silk. It is also common with carpets manufactured entirely of silk. The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which allows silk rug to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different colors which adds a fabulous beauty to the Qum rugs.
